Hearing God's Message in the Mundane

“And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” Luke 2: 8-12 ESV
 
As I read this passage of the first Christmas story, I was reminded of several things.
Observations from recorded events about 6 – 4 BC

1. The Shepherds were ordinary people
2. Their job was one of the most menial jobs to be had at that time
3. They were not educated
4. They were probably being quiet
5. When they heard the message, they naturally reacted with fear

Lessons for me in 2022:

1. God can use me, an ordinary person.
2. God can use me right where I am; I do not need to be doing anything remarkable and “important.”
3. I do not need to wait until I have specific training or degrees.
4. I may need to quiet my heart and life to hear God’s voice.
5. When God speaks to me and gives me a task, I may be afraid to listen at first, but I can trust him to guide me and to be with me through the journey.
